Natural Haircare: 3 Homemade Hair Masks To Strengthen Brittle Hair

Brittle hair that breaks easily can be the result of chemicals found in popular shampoos, conditioners and styling products. In addition, expensive treatments designed to treat brittle hair can sometimes make the problem worse, as ingredients in store-bought products can dry out the hair and strip it of natural oils, making it more fragile and prone to breaking. Making your own hair masks is a simple and inexpensive way to take care of your hair, while also protecting it from harsh products.

Egg and Coconut Mask

Egg yolk is packed with protein that helps to strengthen and repair damaged hair. Coconut oil contains fatty acids that can protect follicles from damage. Beat one or two egg yolks until they begin to foam. Add the egg yolk to one tablespoon of melted coconut oil and mix thoroughly. Smooth the mixture through your hair, working from root to tip, and cover with a shower cap. Leave on for 20 minutes, then rinse out with cool water. Shampoo your hair as usual to remove any traces of egg.

Clay and Honey Mask

Clay has long been used as a deep cleanser for the skin and hair. It can also help to strengthen and improve the condition of brittle hair. Honey is another natural cleanser that can help to repair damage and also leaves your hair feeling soft and shiny. Add a little water to a tablespoon of powdered clay and mix thoroughly. Keep adding small amounts of water until the clay becomes a runny paste. Add one teaspoon of honey and half a teaspoon of olive oil. Massage the mask into your hair and leave on for up to 30 minutes. Rinse out thoroughly and shampoo as usual.

Shea Butter and Vitamin E Mask

Shea butter is known for its skin-softening properties, but it’s also an effective treatment for dry and damaged hair, as it acts as a sealant to trap moisture in the hair follicles. Vitamin E oil and olive oil are also excellent for repairing damage. Add one teaspoon of vitamin E oil and two teaspoons of olive oil to 25 grams of melted shea butter. Apply the mixture to wet hair, massaging gently from root to tip. Leave the mask on for 10 minutes, before rinsing out with warm water.

Store-bought products designed to repair dry, damaged and brittle hair can often make the problem worse, as they contain harsh chemicals that can dry the hair follicles out and strip away natural oils. Homemade hair masks are inexpensive alternatives to store-bought products.
